Makayla Smithee has been awarded the Tom Dawe, Jr. Memorial Scholarship to Ozarka College for the 2013-14 academic year.
Smithee is a 2012 graduate of Thayer High School and is a practical nursing student at Ozarka College - Ash Flat. She and her husband, JC Smithee, live in Mammoth Spring.
Ozarka College President Dr. Richard Dawe and his wife, Chris, endowed the Tom Dawe, Jr. Memorial Scholarship in 2012 to honor his late father by awarding the scholarship to a Thayer High School senior, or recent graduate, who plans to attend Ozarka College.
Tom Dawe, Jr. was a 1956 graduate of Thayer High School and was raised in Thayer by his parents, Tom Dawe, Sr. and Maude Ann Dawe. He and his sister, TeLesa, were raised in their home on Chestnut Street, which was then across from the old high school. Tom was a multi-sport athlete in high school; played the trumpet and tuba for the band; was a United States Air Force Veteran during the Korean War; and went on to have an exciting career as an airline pilot for TWA.
Endowed scholarships are one-time awards distributed to recipients over the academic year, with $250 in the fall and spring term, for a total award of $500.
This scholarship fund is managed by the Ozarka College Foundation, a non-profit 501 (c) (3) organization. For more information about giving opportunities at Ozarka College, please contact Suellen Davidson, director of advancement, at 870-368-2059 or by email at sdavidson@ozarka.edu.
