Ozarka College has received additional fitness equipment to be used in the Paul Miller Fitness Center. Fred Lamb purchased and donated a punching bag and gloves, valued at approximately $700. The fitness center also houses a state of the art weight room and several options for cardio."We're excited about our new equipment and really appreciate Fred's long-time support of the fitness center, " said Stacy Gore, Ozarka College fitness center coordinator. "We invite everyone to come in and let us show you how each machine is operated. We'll do our best to ensure your safety and help you get the most out of each use. "Though the fitness center has always been open to the public, new membership rates have been established to better accommodate the community. Members ages 16 to 59 are $35 per month or $140 for the semester. Ages 60 and over are just $17.50 per month or $70 per semester. For those who are visiting or want to try it out before joining, the College now offers a day pass for $5 or a full week for $10. Ages 60 and over pay one half of those prices.The Paul Miller Fitness Center is open Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and is located in the John E. Creative Writing Course At Ozarka College - Ash Flat
Ozarka College in Ash Flat, Arkansas will host a creative writing continuing education course July 25-27, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Ozarka College English faculty, Tena Rosse, will instruct the course.Rosse has written, presented, and participated in many writing symposiums and workshops. She has been editor and co-editor for The Tributary and was editorial assistant on The Arkansas Review: A Journal of Delta Studies. She also collaborated with Dr. Rob Lamm on a college textbook: Dynamic Argument (published in 2007), which is used in the English Teaching/Education program at Arkansas State University. Rosse has published many short stories and poems; and has been recognized as a Poet of Distinction by the International Poets Society. Her book entitled Full Metal Baskets was published in 2012."Anyone can write, " said Rosse. "In fact, if you have ever told a 'fish' story, then you can write. Great storytelling is what we love about reading. This class will be open to all phases of the writing process, but we will concentrate on short stories, character development and description."Tuition is $25.00 per student, $20 for students ages 60 and over. EMT Program Now Available At Ozarka College - Ash Flat
Ozarka College in Ash Flat will begin offering courses for the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program this coming fall semester. Classes are scheduled to begin on August 16, 2016 and will meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. for the entire fall semester. Additional clinical hours will also be required.Program instructor will be Andy Schisler, long time employee and paramedic for Spring River Ambulance of Cherokee Village. Applications for admissions are currently being accepted and early registration is encouraged. Newsome Retires From Ozarka College
Miriam "Mimi " Newsome has retired from Ozarka College after twenty-four years of service. Ms. Newsome was honored at a retirement celebration on Thursday, June 30, 2016, where family, friends and colleagues shared their sincere appreciation for the joy that Mimi has brought to their lives. Congratulatory speeches were made and everyone wished her a long and joyous retirement.Ozarka College vice president of finance, Tina Wheelis, welcomed guests and spoke about how most people come into our lives for a season, a reason or a lifetime, but Mimi has done all of those. "When I think about what I want to be like when I grow up, I think of Mimi, " said Wheelis. "She always has a smile on her face and words of encouragement to share. I'm thankful she's been a part of my life for so many years. " Scott Pinkston, chief information officer, spoke about Mimi's caring heart and how she takes care of everyone."How special someone is, is determined by his or her heart. And you, Mimi, have a heart of gold, " said Suellen Davidson, director of advancement. Many other attendees also shared stories about working with Mimi and the kind of person she is. Dedicated, energetic, the true meaning of a friend, one who has touched the lives of many, and the list goes on. Dr. Keith McClanahan, provost and executive vice president of learning, also commented on Mimi's energetic personality as he presented her with a plaque to honor her years of service.Dr. Richard Dawe, Ozarka College president, was unable to attend due to a family medical need but added; "Mimi has a very kind and generous heart, and a personality that makes everyone she comes into contact with feel appreciated and welcome. The Ozarka family will miss her dearly and we wish her much happiness. ""When my husband first moved me here, I did not like it, " said Newsome. "But my family encouraged me to take some food service classes at Ozarka College and the people here became a second family to me. I remember so much that my teachers taught me, but never thought I'd be one of them. "It's a tough call to say whether Mimi will be most remembered for the peanut butter pies she made famous while working in the culinary arts department, or for the love that she showed all of the children when working at Ozarka Kids Academy, but there is no doubt that she will greatly be missed.

Ozarka College Donates To Relay For Life
On July 18, 2016, Ozarka College presented a check in the amount of $1,637.00 to the American Cancer Society for the Izard County Relay for Life. The Classified Staff Council raised funds by accepting donations from employees who opted to participate in, "Jeans on Thursdays " during the month of April, and they hosted a bake sale and silent auction.On May 11, 2016, Ozarka College hosted their annual event, "Grillin' for a Cure. " Employees purchased the supplies for cheeseburger meals and volunteered their time to prepare and deliver them to area businesses that placed orders. The College would like to thank the community for supporting this fundraising event!

Holzhauer Appointed To Ozarka College Board Of Trustees
Governor Asa Hutchinson recently announced the appointment of Fred Holzhauer, resident of Ash Flat, Arkansas, to the Ozarka College Board of Trustees. His seven-year term will expire in 2023.Trustee Holzhauer, born and raised in Gillett, Arkansas, has been a resident of Sharp County for the past 17 years. He graduated from Gillett High School in 1981 and the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville in 1985. There he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Agri-Business before attending Spartan School of Aeronautics in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He has completed numerous banking schools and seminars, as well as graduated from Arkansas Bankers Association Commercial Lending School (2003), Barret School of Commercial Lending (2009), and Barret School of Banking (2010). In 2007, Holzhauer became First Community Bank's vice president of commercial lending at the Cherokee Village/Highland branch."I am very honored and humbled to be appointed to the Ozarka College Board of Trustees, " said Fred Holzhauer. "Ozarka College is the greatest asset we have in the communities and surrounding areas it serves. Senator Collins-Smith Awards Grant Funding To Ozarka College
Ozarka College has received notification from White River Planning and Development District, Inc. that Senator Linda Collins-Smith has awarded $15,000 in general improvement funds to the College. $10,000 of this grant is to be allocated to expenses for paving the parking lot at Ozarka College - Mammoth Spring, and the remaining $5,000 will benefit the Ozarka College Aviation program.Ozarka College president, Dr. Richard Dawe, had the opportunity to meet with Senator Linda Collins-Smith at Ozarka's campus in Mammoth Spring on July 13, 2016. FNBC Bank To Sponsor Ozarka College's Sprint At The Spring 5k
FNBC Bank will once again be the presenting sponsor at the 2nd annual Ozarka College Sprint at the Spring 5K. This 5K run/walk is being hosted by the Ozarka College Foundation on Saturday, September 3, 2016, with all proceeds benefiting Ozarka College - Mammoth Spring. History Of Performance Art And Practice Coming To Ozarka College - Mountain View
Ozarka College in Mountain View will offer an eight-week History of Performance Art and Practice continuing education course, beginning in September. Topics covered will include the history of performance art from the second half of the 20th Century through contemporary works in the 21st Century. This will be done through readings, videos of artists works and discussion.Students will be engaged in various exercises to prepare them to create and perform their own performance art pieces within the context of what they have learned from past performance works. The course runs from September 8 through October 26, meeting on Wednesdays, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.Course instructor will be John Chiaromonte and tuition is just $25.00 per student, $20.00 for Senior Citizens (ages 60 and up). Son Lamb Tribute To Be Held At Ozarka College
A tribute to E.F. Son Lamb, a "Sonny Night in August," will take place on Friday, August 26, 2016 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the John E. Miller Education Complex at Ozarka College in Melbourne, Arkansas. Son is a man who has supported, promoted and encouraged not only businesses in North Arkansas, but individuals as well. With his development of Channel 5, viewers in the local cable TV service area have been entertained while keeping up with local news and events.Presented in a "This Is Your Life" format, the stage will be set in Channel 5 style and moderated by Channel 5 alumni Jerry Blankenship and Eddie Creighton.
