Wilson Appointed Associate Vice President Of Student Services At Ozarka College

Ozarka College is pleased to announce the recent appointment of Josh Wilson as the Associate Vice President of Student Services. Prior to this new leadership role, Wilson served as the Associate Vice President of Planning and Institutional Research. Wilson also has experience serving as the Pathway to Accelerated Completion and Employment (PACE) Grant Project Coordinator and the Ozarka College Grant Writer. In his most recent position as AVP of Planning and IR, Wilson led strategic planning and Ozarka College assessment and also facilitated research and data analysis for the College."Josh is such a strong performer and a perfect fit to lead such a critical area for Ozarka, " said Dr. Richard Dawe, Ozarka College President. Shell Appointed Associate Vice President Of Planning And Institutional Research At Ozarka College

Ozarka College is pleased to announce the recent appointment of Deltha Shell as the Associate Vice President of Planning and Institutional Research. Prior to this role, Shell served as the Director of the TRiO Student Support Services program at Ozarka College."Deltha's exceptional performance as Ozarka's TRiO Director and her critical thinking and organizational abilities made it clear to me that she was a perfect fit for her new role, " said Dr. Richard Dawe, Ozarka College President. "Leading the planning and institutional research efforts of a college are absolutely essential as we strive to do far more to support student learning with very limited resources. "Shell holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Lyon College at Batesville, a Master in Business Administration from University of Arkansas in Little Rock, and a Specialist in Community College Teaching from Arkansas State University. Ozarka College To Present Community Baking Series

The Ozarka College Culinary Arts Program will present a continuing education series on baking, beginning in April 2016. This hands-on three-week series will focus on different types of baked goods each week, giving participants an opportunity to learn from Certified Chef de Cuisine, Alden Griffus. Chef Alden will share the tricks of the trade and teach participants how to consistently produce quality-baked goods in their very own kitchens.Each course meets on the specified Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Students may choose to register for the entire series (includes all three sessions) for a total cost of $50 ($35 for participants over the age of 60), or pay as they go $20 per session ($15 for participants over 60). Registration fees include the instruction, demonstration, participation and a treat to take home.The first course will take place on April 7 when Chef Alden covers the basics of pie making from crust to filling. She will address the age-old questions like what fat to use in the crust, why some fillings work and others don't, and what type of thickener is best to use with different fillings? Participants will then make their own apple pie to takehome to their families.The second course will take place on April 14, covering quick breads and muffins. Participants will learn what type of flour to use when, the difference between baking soda and baking powder, when to add chunks as recipes instruct, and so much more. Participants will also choose from a selection of different recipes and take home a delicious treat.The final course will take place on April 21 and will cover yeast breads. In essence, yeast breads are simple, but their mastery continues to elude even the most skilled home cook and many chefs, too. Chef Alden will discuss the process of bread making, highlight the trouble areas, and show participants what each step should look like. Each participant will be able to either take home a country loaf or rolls to enjoy later.Seating is limited and registration is requested by April 1, 2016. Ozarka Kids Academy Celebrates Dr. Seuss' Birthday

On March 2, 2016, Ozarka College Kids Academy celebrated the birthday of the beloved Dr. Seuss. The children enjoyed a delicious meal of green eggs and ham and an animated reading presented by the Cat in the Hat. Following tradition, the Kids Academy acknowledged the iconic author's contribution to children's literature with a week of fun-filled activities.The Ozarka Kids Academy is open from 7:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., Monday through Friday, and provides quality childcare for children ages 6 weeks to 5 years. Ozarka College To Host Melbourne Fly-In: An Aviation Experience

Ozarka College will host Melbourne Fly-In: An Aviation Experience on April 9, 2016 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. This event will take place at the Melbourne Airport (42A) and is free to attend.  Bring the family to enjoy a day of fun with food and airplanes. Start the day with a pancake breakfast (suggested donation of $7 per person), explore vintage airplanes, meet with pilots, learn more about the Ozarka College Aviation program, and much more. Discovery flights will be available for ages 10 to 17 and attendees can practice their flight skills on the Ozarka Aviation simulator training device.    Pilots from all over will be flying in to participate in a safety seminar titled, "Surprise! Surprise! Human Factors Training. 8th Annual International Day Event To Take Place At Ozarka College

The Ozarka College Diversity and Cultural Events Committee will be hosting the 8th  Annual International Day, beginning March 29, 2016. Ozarka students, faculty, and staff are invited to participate in this fun and educational event that will focus on the country and culture of Switzerland.      International Day is free of admission and will take place at the following specified Ozarka College campus locations: Tuesday, March 29 in Mountain View; Thursday, March 31 in Melbourne at the Student Services Center; Tuesday, April 5 in Ash Flat; and Thursday, April 7 in Mammoth Spring.  Each of these events will begin at 11:00 a.m. and end by 1:00 p.m.There will be a $25 cash drawing at each campus location for those who participate in this event.  The Ozarka College Diversity and Cultural Events Committee is committed to providing diverse and cultural experiences and opportunities for the College community, establishing an environment in which greater intellectual development can occur. Ozarka College Students To Raffle Painting

Ozarka College has partnered with EF College Study Tours to organize a trip to Costa Rica: Pura Vida. The trip is sure to be full of unforgettable educational and cultural experiences while getting an up-close and personal look at the ever-changing landscapes of Pura Vida. Six students and one faculty member are preparing for the nine-day excursion that will take place from May 9, 2016 through May 17, 2016. The approximate cost of this program is $2,400 per student.To assist with out of pocket expenses, Leslie Love, a local artist and Ozarka College Instructor, has donated a beautiful painting titled, "Spring River: First Green." Students will be selling chances to win the painting; $5 per raffle ticket or five chances for $20. Students will have a photo of the painting to show when selling raffle tickets, but it can also be seen on display at Ozarka College in Ash Flat, Arkansas.Tena Rosse, Ozarka College English Faculty and the group leader of this program explains, "The money raised will be used to pay for meals not included in the travel plan, required tips for coach driver, tour guide, in-country tour director, excursion guides, hotels, etc., as well as taxi/cab fare and miscellaneous expenses while in Costa Rica. Cone Appointed Director Of Trio Student Support Services At Ozarka College

Ozarka College is pleased to announce the recent appointment of Tracy Cone as the Director of TRIO Student Support Services. Prior to this role, Cone served as the Academic Advising Coordinator for TRIO Student Support Services. In her previous position, Cone was primarily responsible for program services related to the advising of program participants, as well as the planning and coordinating of culturally enriching trips and activities for program participants. Successful Spring Gala Hosted By Ozarka College Foundation

The weather was beautiful on March 31, 2016 and the Ozarka College Foundation Spring Gala was yet again a huge success. The 2016 Spring Gala took place in the FNBC Student Commons Area of the Student Services Center, at Ozarka College in Melbourne, Arkansas.  This year's theme was, "Make a Difference! Endow, Educate, Empower " and the presenting sponsor was Centennial Bank.   Dr. Richard Dawe, Ozarka College President, welcomed the crowd of more than 250 attendees and spoke about successes shared by the College this past year. Bob Evins, Ozarka College Trustee, offered a blessing prior to attendees enjoying a steak dinner prepared by Ozarka College's Culinary Arts Department.Guests were served a wonderful meal followed by sponsor recognition and student speaker introduction by Suellen Davidson, Ozarka College Director of Advancement. Student speaker, Whitney Mendoza, spoke about her need to return to school, concerns she had about doing so with being a wife and mother, and the wonderful experiences she has had as a student in the Nursing program. Whitney also shared that none of that would have been possible without the help of generous donors who funded scholarships that she has received during her enrollment at Ozarka.Following Whitney's speech was a video created by Erica Roark, Ozarka College Alumna. The video was very moving, as it captured the journey students take while fulfilling their educational goals at Ozarka College.Foundation Board Chair, Mike Watson, prepared guests for the live auction that would close out the evening's festivities. He announced that Sissy's Log Cabin donated a beautiful ruby and diamond necklace that each highest bidder would be entered into a drawing for a chance to win at the end of the auction. Auctioneer, Tony Watson, then auctioned off several items that were generously donated by local community members and businesses. Ozarka College Friends Of The Paul Weaver Library To Present Tour D'Art Event

Friends of the Paul Weaver Library at Ozarka College will present the 5th annual art extravaganza, Tour D'Art, on Thursday, April 21, 2016 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. in the lobby of the John E. Miller Education Complex.Events will begin with a welcome by Dr. Keith McClanahan, Ozarka College Provost and Executive Vice President of Learning.   After the welcome, Laura Brush, President of the Friends, will introduce the Showcase Artist and other artists presenting in the show.The art exhibit will take place in the lobby and will include works from Melbourne, Izard County Consolidated and Calico Rock high school art students and their instructors. Also featured will be works from The Art Center of North Arkansas, Strawberry River Art Association, and Fulton County Arts Council.   Artisans throughout the region, as well as Ozarka College students, faculty, staff and friends will also be participating. Fall Registration Is Now Open At Ozarka College

Registration is in full swing at Ozarka College for current and new Ozarka College students. Now is the time to seek advising and register for summer or fall 2016 classes.The Summer I term runs from May 16 to June 17 and the Summer II term runs from July 5 to August 5. The first day of Fall classes will be August 15. By meeting early with an Advisor, students are often able to secure the classes that best fit their schedule, as well as learn of prerequisites that they may want to complete during one or both of the summer terms.Both summer and fall courses are available at each of our four campus locations in Melbourne, Ash Flat, Mammoth Spring, and Mountain View, as well as fully online. First Solo Flight Completed Through Ozarka College Aviation Program

Ozarka College is proud to announce that Jacob Harness of Mountain View, Arkansas is the first student to solo as part of the College's Aviation Program. Prior to taking his solo flight, Harness was required to receive and log flight training for maneuvers and procedures ranging from proper flight preparation procedures to emergency procedures and equipment malfunctions. Additionally, he had to pass an aeronautical knowledge test. On April 13, 2016, Harness flew one of Ozarka's aircraft, a Cessna 172, without an instructor to the practice area west of Melbourne. He practiced maneuvers on his own and returned to the Melbourne Municipal Airport without incident. Harness is part of the inaugural class of students in the Associate of Science Professional Pilot - Aviation degree program. Ozarka College began offering flight training at the Melbourne Municipal Airport on July 1, 2015. Degree-seeking students began flight lessons in January of 2016. Students in the program are working toward FAA certification as Private Pilots. Flying the aircraft without an instructor, or solo, is an integral part of that process. The College expects all of their students to complete their first solo by summer 2016. "Students gain confidence when they solo, " said Nick Lenczycki, Ozarka College Director of Aviation. "Jacob handles the aircraft well. By completing this solo, he will demonstrate that he is ready for the next step in his training. Ozarka Kids Academy Summer Enrollment

Ozarka Kids Academy at Ozarka College in Melbourne, Arkansas is now enrolling students for the School Age Summer Program. This program is designed for kids ages 6-10 years. The cost is $90 per week and the program will run ten weeks, beginning May 31. The School Age Summer Program will come to a close on August 5.Students will engage in curriculum designed to their interests and ability. Ozarka Kids Academy hours are 7:00 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., Monday through Friday. Ozarka College Will Be Grillin' For A Cure

Ozarka College will be Grillin' for a Cure on Wednesday, May 11, 2016. This is an annual fundraiser for the Izard County Relay for Life. Meals will include a hamburger (with or without cheese), a bag of chips and a cookie for $6.00. Ozarka College Seeks Academic All-Star

Arkansas Community Colleges (ACC) is once again offering the Academic All-Star scholarship program to students of two-year colleges in the state. The purpose of the Academic All-Star program is to recognize the scholarly and service achievements of Arkansas' two-year college students. Academic All-Stars will be recognized at the ACC Awards Brunch at the annual conference to be held in October 2016, in Hot Springs, Arkansas and will receive a $500 scholarship to complete the final semester of their associate degree. The deadline to apply is May 27, 2016. To be eligible for consideration, a student must be an Arkansas resident, currently enrolled at Ozarka College and expect to be enrolled at Ozarka College through at least fall 2016, have completed a minimum of 24 credit hours in pursuit of an associate degree by June 1, 2016, have the intent to graduate from Ozarka College with an associate degree by summer 2017, and have a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 in all credit coursework completed at Ozarka College. Representative Gray To Address Ozarka College Graduates

Michelle Gray, republican member of the Arkansas House of Representatives, representing District 62, will address Ozarka College graduates during the 2016 Commencement Ceremony. Commencement will take place on Thursday, May 5 at 7:00 p.m., in the auditorium of the John E. Miller Education Complex in Melbourne, Arkansas.Approximately 400 students are expected to receive credentials from 32 Ozarka College degree programs. Most of these students have overcome the challenge of balancing school with work, home, and family life. The administration, faculty, and staff are proud of the hard work that Ozarka College graduates have dedicated to achieve their goals. Ozarka College Hosted Student Nursing Conference

On March 17 and 18, 2016, Ozarka College hosted the fifth annual student nursing conference in Melbourne, Arkansas. Approximately 80 students from Ozarka’s Melbourne, Ash Flat, Mammoth Spring, and Mountain View LPN programs were in attendance. Tabitha Breshears, BSN, RN, Nurse Manager of CHI St. Vincent’s Infirmary ER and American Foundation of Suicide Prevention representative, spoke to students about suicide prevention. Representatives from UAMS AR SAVES and Community Medical Center of Izard County presented information on strokes. Students had the opportunity to learn about brain injuries while walking through the Mega Brain. Over 100 high school students from Highland, Calico Rock, and Melbourne also came to campus to tour the Mega Brain. Ozarka College LPN students competed in various nursing competitions that tested their skills acquired as a nursing student. Winners of the competitions are as follows: Anatomy and Physiology: 1. Mckee-Mcswain To Retire From Ozarka College

Cheri McKee-McSwain, Ozarka College speech, theatre and art instructor, is retiring after twelve years of service. Cheri was honored at a retirement celebration on Friday, April 22, 2016 at Ozarka College - Mountain View.Ozarka College President, Dr. Richard Dawe, spoke about Cheri's career at Ozarka and presented her with a plaque honoring the great achievement of retirement. Chris Lorch, Ozarka College Associate Vice President of Academics, shared some fond memories he has from working with Cheri. "No matter how busy Cheri found herself, whether personally or professionally, she always made time for both her colleagues and her students, " said Lorch. "Besides being an incredible instructor, she is a genuinely good person who is always concerned with the needs of others. "Lindsay Wilson-Galloway, Director of Ozarka College - Mountain View, read an email she received from Crystal Burns, a former student, who was unable to attend !Ms. Mc Mc's' retirement party. "Your love for art comes out of every fiber of your body and makes every student want to love art. People don't take your classes because they have to, they take them because you make learning matter. "Other students also spoke during the celebration, and it is evident that Cheri not only educated them, she made a lasting impression that they will cherish. Cheri also spoke about her time at Ozarka and said, "My greatest reward while at Ozarka College was those priceless !aha' moments, revealed in the eyes of students that lit up when he/she realized that, yes, this is possible.
