Ribbon Cutting Ceremony To Take Place At Ozarka College
Ozarka College will host a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the Student Services Center in Melbourne, Arkansas on January 29, 2015. This event begins at 11:00 AM and the community is invited to attend.With the support of local sales tax revenue provided by the citizens of Melbourne, the Ozarka College Board of Trustees issued approximately $2.9 million in revenue bonds to finance construction for this state of the art facility. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on September 18, 2013 and construction, led by Construction Network Inc., followed.Just over one year later, the Student Services Center is ready to open and will significantly enhance the Ozarka College experience. The Student Services Center will serve as a hub of campus activity and provide a central location for meetings and special events for community groups and students. Additionally, this will offer businesses and organizations throughout the region access to leading-edge technology and conference facilities."We hope to have a large crowd of friends and supporters for this very special Ribbon Cutting event, " said Dr. Richard Dawe, Ozarka College President. Ozarka College in Mountain View will host an Introduction to Computers course to be offered through Continuing Education beginning in March.This four-week course, being taught by Frances Bullard, will cover basic computer concepts, Microsoft Windows, Internet search and navigation, e-mail basics, and sending attachments. The course runs from March 6 through March 27, meeting on Fridays, from 9:00 AM - Noon.The tuition is just $25.00 per student, $20.00 for ages 60 and over. Student Services Center Ribbon Cutting
Approximately 225 guests gathered at the new Student Services Center at Ozarka College in Melbourne on Thursday, January 29, 2015 for a ribbon cutting ceremony. Members of the Ozarka College faculty, staff, administration, Board of Trustees, and Foundation Board of Directors attended the festive event. Special guests also attending included donors, friends and supporters from across the state.Ozarka College President, Dr. Richard Dawe, welcomed the crowd and provided introductions. He shared his appreciation for the vision of Representative John E. Miller for establishing Ozarka College 40 years ago. "This Student Center and Ozarka College would not be possible without John E. Miller's commitment to the region, Higher Education and our state, " said Dr. Dawe. Board Chairman, Bob Evins, thanked those in attendance and spoke to the success of Ozarka students and the importance of the new facility. Remarks were also made by Congressman Rick Crawford, Mayor Rhonda Halbrook, Chris Mosley, a student at Ozarka College, and Mike Watson, Foundation Board Member and Capital Campaign Co-Chair.Music was provided by Pam Setser and Danny Dozier and refreshments were prepared by the Ozarka College Culinary Arts Department. Congressman Rick Crawford Supports Ozarka College Student Center At Ribbon Cutting
Ozarka College was honored to have Congressman Rick Crawford present at the new Student Services Center ribbon cutting ceremony that took place on the main campus in Melbourne, Arkansas on January 29, 2015. Cong. Crawford spoke about his educational experiences and the importance of two-year degrees and job skilled training in today's society.
Crawford explained that Ozarka does an excellent job providing those types of educational opportunities to students in the surrounding communities. Ozarka has also served as the meeting location for Cong. Crawford's presentations on the Farm Bill and he looks forward to utilizing the new facility in the future.

Whitten Is Co-Recipient Of The E. Wilson Green Award
Ozarka College is proud to announce that Kim Whitten, Director of Ozarka College in Ash Flat, is a co-recipient of the 2014 E. Wilson Green Award. Nominees of this award should be a person or organization that is a Civic Minded Volunteer and has distinguished themselves by love and vigorous support of the Spring River Area community. Whitten received this honor during the Spring River Area Chamber of Commerce annual banquet that was held on January 20, 2015 at Artisan Steakhouse and Grill in Highland, AR. She and fellow Rotarian, Donald Britnell, tied for this honor."I have attended the Spring River Chamber of Commerce Banquet many times over the past several years and have watched people who I respect in the community receive the E. Wilson Green award, " says Kim Whitten. "I would never expect to be honored with such an accolade! " Whitten who has been an employee of Ozarka College for several years loves the Sharp County community and enjoys doing her part to serve. Ozarka College Foundation Accepts Rent House Donation
The Ozarka College Foundation Board of Directors recently began accepting funds generated from a rent house, located near Hardy. The property is owned by a person who lives out of state and wishes to remain anonymous. These funds will be used for Ozarka College student scholarships beginning in the spring semester of 2015.Foundation Board Chair, Garry Lawrence, explained that this is a unique venture and the Board looks forward to exploring similar contributions with future donors. In this scenario, the property had been vacant for some time and was in need of repairs. Lawrence and other contractors assisted the owner with getting the house repaired and ready for rental. Upon completion of the renovation project, the house was rented and the proceeds will be given to the Foundation and in turn be used to fund the Garry and Carol Ann Lawrence Scholarship. In addition to helping students by way of scholarships, the owner is also pleased to know the home is being well taken care of, something he was unable to do. The Ozarka College Foundation is a 501(c)3 organization and all donations are tax deductible on itemized tax forms. Ozarka College Has Low Student Loan Default Rates
The Financial Aid office at Ozarka College has received more good news about their student loan default rates. By developing a Default Management Taskforce, a Default Management Plan, enhancing face-to-face counseling each year, working with a third party servicer, and heavily monitoring the default rates, they continue to see a decrease in student loan defaults.The 2012 three year cohort default rate is currently at 20.46%, 2013 is at 11.15% and 2014 is at 4.42%. These rates are more than 50% lower than the previous three-year cohort default rates.Ozarka College's efforts in successfully lowering loan default rates and having fewer students need loans is just one way they work towards helping their students. Students are provided with information on scholarships, payment plans, Pell grants, and work-study opportunities, which will help them with obtaining their educational goals with fewer loans. Ladies Luncheon And Fashion Show Coming To Ozarka College - Mountain View
The Ozarka College Foundation will host their third annual Ladies' Luncheon and Fashion Show on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Ozarka College in Mountain View. The event will take place in the Ozark Heritage Bank Student Commons Area beginning at 11:00 AM.This year's event will feature food, fashion, and fun. The Ozark Folk Center Skillet Restaurant will provide a catered lunch for the ladies in attendance. Local vendors will be showcased during the fashion show featuring their latest styles. Ozarka College Kicks Off Nursing High School Opportunity
Ozarka College recently partnered with four area High Schools to offer graduating high school students the opportunity to attend a Licensed Practical Nursing (LPN) Program. This pilot program began at the beginning of the Spring 2015 semester and is designated for concurrent enrollment students; students who are taking high school and college courses simultaneously."What we wanted to accomplish was to get high school seniors, primarily from Izard County, to take coursework through Ozarka their last semester of high school, " said Susan Thielemier, Ozarka College LPN and Nursing Instructor. "By taking designated prerequisite courses during the spring and summer terms, these students will be eligible for a LPN program starting August 2015. "Thielemier and Valerie West, another Ozarka College LPN Instructor who is also working on this project, have both been pleased with the number of students and counselors interested in this venture. Schools currently participating in the Nursing High School Opportunity include Calico Rock, Izard County Consolidated, Melbourne, and Highland.The same approach is also being offered to the general public. National Virtual Aviation Safety Stand Down Webinar Coming To Ozarka College
For the first time ever, there will be a National Virtual Aviation Safety Stand Down and Ozarka College Aviation will serve as a hosting location for this event. A safety stand down is an event at which pilots gather to learn new information, refresh already learned information, and to engage in discussion with safety experts and fellow pilots.The stand down will take place on Saturday, March 21, 2015 at the Ozarka College Aviation department, housed in the Melbourne Municipal Airport (42A). Financial Aid Assistance Available At Ozarka College
The Arkansas Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (AASFAA) will award at least two $500 scholarships to Arkansas students planning to attend member institutions, Ozarka College being one. These scholarships are non-renewable awards.
Scholarship winners must be enrolled at least half time during the 2015-2016 academic year in a program that leads to a college degree or certificate at Ozarka College or another AASFAA member institution.
All applications must be postmarked by April 1, 2015. Any application postmarked after that date will not be considered. Limit one entry per person. Winners will be selected at a random drawing during the 2015 Spring AASFAA Conference.

Date Set For American Voices - Americans With Disabilities
The American Voices Series, sponsored by the Ozarka College Diversity and Cultural Events Committee, will host its third annual event featuring the voices of Americans with Disabilities. This event will take place in the lecture hall of the John E. Miller Education Complex in Melbourne on April 7, 2015 from 10:30 AM until 1:45 PM. Plans are also underway to live stream presentations to Ozarka College campus locations in Ash Flat, Mammoth Spring, and Mountain View.Supported in part by a grant from the Arkansas Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities, American Voices - Americans with Disabilities will include three morning speakers, an information fair during the lunch break, and a five-person discussion panel in the afternoon. This is an excellent opportunity for all students, but particularly those majoring in nursing, criminal justice, teaching, and other public services, as they will gain valuable information on interacting with persons with disabilities.This event is sure to be great for professional development, but will also be beneficial to the community at large, so they will be able to successfully communicate to individuals with a disability. Spring Break Hours Of Operation
Though Ozarka College students will not have classes March 23 through March 27, the College will only be closed for Spring Break on Friday, March 27, 2015.All four Ozarka College campus locations (Melbourne, Ash Flat, Mammoth Spring and Mountain View) will be open and staff will be available Monday through Thursday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. This provides current students with a great opportunity to utilize campus resources, such as computer labs and study areas. Both new and current students are encouraged to use this time to meet with Student Services for summer enrollment and fall semester advising.The Ozarka Cafe` will be open, serving breakfast and lunch, Monday through Wednesday during Spring Break. Registration for Ozarka College summer classes is currently open to both, new and current students. The first summer session begins on May 18, 2015 and ends one month later on June 18. The second summer session will begin on July 1 and end on August 4. Arkansas Department Of Education Approves Ozarka College As A Distance Learning Provider
Ozarka College has been granted formal approval from the Arkansas Department of Education to continue serving as a digital learning provider in Arkansas.
With this approval, Ozarka will continue its important efforts to collaborate with and effectively serve our secondary partners in our four-county service area and beyond. According to the Arkansas Department of Education Digital Learning Act of 2013, "All public school districts and public charter schools shall provide at least one (1) digital learning course to their students as either a primary or supplementary method of instruction. " With this approval, Ozarka can work with these institutions to facilitate this requirement.
Ozarka College received approval for seventeen courses, which includes, but is not limited to, the following: American History, American National Government, Biology, College Algebra, Communications, English Composition, Fine Arts Music, Geography, Computer Applications, Psychology, Trigonometry, World Civilization, and World Literature.
Additionally, these courses may also be taken by students wishing to earn concurrent credit. Pending approval from the individual school district, students can take selected courses through Ozarka College and earn both high school and college credit, which additionally will transfer to any institution in the state through the Arkansas Course Transfer System.
