Dr. Richard Dawe and his wife Chris recently established a $10,000 endowed scholarship for graduating seniors of Thayer High School to attend Ozarka College. Dr. Dawe, President of Ozarka College, felt a scholarship honoring his father Tom L. Dawe Jr. was especially meaningful as the option to attend a two year college near the Thayer and Mammoth Spring area was never an option prior to establishing the campus in Mammoth Spring two years ago.
Tom Dawe Jr., a 1956 graduate of Thayer High School, was raised in Thayer by his parents, Tom Dawe Sr. and Maude Ann Dawe. He and his sister TeLesa were raised in their home on Chestnut Street which was then across from the old High School. Tom was a multi-sport athlete in High School; played the trumpet and tuba for the band; was a United States Air Force Veteran during the Korean War; and went on to have an exciting career as an airline pilot for TWA. He passed from this life on July 25, 2003 but his love for Thayer and aviation lives on through his three sons, 10 grandchildren and great granddaughter.
Richard and Chris believe that he would have been pleased that his legacy will live on in this modest contribution to the college education of deserving Thayer Graduates. Additional information on this scholarship opportunity may be attained by contacting Ozarka College or Thayer High School.
